Two people, one keyboard. It sounds like a compromise and it is usually the most fun anyone has on a site like this. Split-keyboard games have not changed much in twenty years, and that is because the format is hard to improve: no accounts, no lobbies, no waiting for a match, no one leaving halfway through.

How the controls are split

The convention is simple. One player takes the arrow keys on the right side of the keyboard, the other takes WASD on the left. Action buttons follow the same logic — usually the keys immediately around each player’s movement cluster. Every game page here lists the exact keys for both players under Controls, because the convention has exceptions and guessing is a bad way to start a match.

The practical constraint is the keyboard, not the game. Cheap membrane keyboards can only register a limited number of simultaneous keypresses, and the ones they drop are often exactly the combination two players need at once. If inputs seem to vanish during a busy moment, that is hardware, not the game.

Local versus online

Both exist here and they feel completely different. Online multiplayer connects you through the provider’s servers, matches you with strangers, and depends on how many people are playing that particular game right now — an empty match at four in the morning is population, not a fault. Local multiplayer needs a second person in the room and works whether or not anyone else in the world is playing.

Local games also cannot work on a phone, for the obvious reason. If you are on a tablet or a phone, look for the online titles instead.
