Arcade Games

Arcade games are about the run. One life or several, a score that climbs, and a difficulty curve that eventually wins. They are short by design — the point is not to finish but to get further than last time.

The arcade tradition is older than browsers and the rules have not changed much: simple controls, escalating speed, and a score you want to beat. Endless runners, one-button jumpers, brick breakers, snake variants and dodge-everything shooters all sit here. So do modern games that borrow the structure — a short loop, instant restart, and no penalty for failing except starting again.

What makes one good. Restart speed. An arcade game that takes three seconds to get you back into play feels completely different from one that shows a menu, an animation and an advert. The best titles here understand that the loop between dying and trying again is the game.

Controls. Most arcade games use one or two keys, which makes them work equally well on a keyboard and as taps on a screen. Games that need precise aiming are the exception and are noticeably easier with a mouse.
