A puzzle game can mean a five-minute match-three round on a phone, a logic grid that wants a pencil and paper, or a physics sandbox where the solution is obvious the moment you stop overthinking it. The common thread is that the game waits for you: almost nothing here punishes a pause.
What tends to work well. If you want something to unwind with, look for match-three, jigsaw and hidden-object titles — they are forgiving and the progress is visible. If you want to be genuinely stuck for a while, sokoban-style block pushers, pipe and wire connection puzzles, and escape-room games are where the difficulty lives. Word and number games sit in between and tend to age well, because a good one is worth replaying.
Playing on a phone. Most puzzle games were designed for touch first, so this is one of the few categories where the mobile experience is often better than the desktop one. Games with small grids or drag-precision requirements are the exception — those are easier with a mouse.
